Engulfing me in your infinite arms.
Consuming me with your limitlessness.
You are not my fall back, you are my Plan A.
You are my first and only resort.
You are my impenetrable protection.
Like armor, a wall, a shield-
you wrap yourself around me in defense.
The absence of any light.
The darkest of all shades.
You are what keeps me from reality.
Darkness, you hide the worst parts
of this ugly and bitter world.
Cloaking objects and people alike from innocent
eyes, and making things seemingly invisible.
Our savior here on earth.
The most honest existence we know.
Protector of our growing youth.
You keep wandering eyes from monsters.
Both the monsters hiding under our bed,
and those behind frigid bars or locked doors.
We can’t fear anything you’ve enclosed
because what we can’t see can’t hurt us.
The mystery of whether it be good or bad,
that thing or being you could be hiding,
that ever lingering mystery of existence,
it’s as meaningless as ever.
You blind us with your presence,
keep us from the possible worst,
then expose us to the truths-
but only with your absence.
